“I Thought Everyone Would Be Young, Fit and Skinny.”
Trying something new can feel intimidating. Maybe you’ve watched aerial silks online and thought, That looks amazing… but it’s probably not for someone like me. It’s a common thought.
Many people imagine they’ll walk into a studio filled with experienced performers or incredibly athletic people. That they’re not strong enough, flexible enough, or confident enough to fit in.
But the reality is often very different.
Curious, But Unsure Where to Start
One of our students, Katherine, had always been fascinated by aerial silks.
“I’ve always thought silks looks really cool. I’ve done all the other stuff. I’ve coached gymnastics all growing up, so I’ve kind of always been interested in that sort of thing.”
Curiosity was enough to take the first step. And once classes began, she quickly realised aerial silks offered much more than learning new skills.
“Found straight away it was a really good workout and it was nice to walk in and have people greet you by your name.”
Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. Being welcomed, recognised, and feeling like you belong can completely change the experience of trying something new.
A Great Teacher Makes All the Difference
Learning a new skill takes patience, encouragement, and the right guidance. Having an instructor who celebrates your progress can make those first classes feel exciting instead of overwhelming.
As she puts it: “And our teacher, Bianca, is incredible.”
Over time, something else happened too.
“We’ve all become really good friends and really nice to have lots of different abilities within our class.”
Everyone progresses at their own pace, and that’s exactly what makes the class environment so encouraging. Beginners and more experienced students can learn alongside one another, supporting each other throughout the journey.
The Biggest Surprise Was the People
Before joining The Pole Room Rowville, she had imagined a very different kind of studio.
“Kind of imagined everyone would be really young and fit and skinny and all those kinds of things.”
Instead, she discovered something far more welcoming.
“Every kind of person and everyone has a go and has fun and laughs at each other and laughs at themselves. It’s been really great.”
That sense of community is what many students tell us they value most. People come from different backgrounds, different fitness levels, and different stages of life. They’re all there for the same reason: to learn something new, challenge themselves, and enjoy the process.
Fear Doesn’t Last as Long as You Think
Starting is usually the hardest part. It’s natural to feel nervous before your first class. Most people do. But those nerves often disappear much faster than expected.
“I really just like the people. Just do it and within about five seconds you’ll forget that you were ever scared.”
Sometimes all it takes is walking through the door.
Could Aerial Silks Be Your Next Adventure?
If you’ve been thinking about trying aerial silks but have been holding yourself back because you don’t feel “fit enough” or worry you’ll stand out, you’re not alone.
Many students arrive with those same concerns. What they often find instead is a welcoming community, supportive instructors, plenty of encouragement, and the excitement of discovering what they’re capable of.
You don’t need experience to begin. You just need the willingness to give it a go.
