Trying something completely new can feel intimidating, especially when you’re walking into a place you’ve never experienced before.
For Ashita, joining The Pole Room Melbourne CBD wasn’t just about learning pole dancing. It meant stepping outside everything that felt familiar. Coming from India, she had never even heard of pole dancing growing up.
“I come from India, it’s a very different culture. Like I don’t think in my city at that time I had heard of pole dancing so I was really scared.”
Like many people before their first class, she wasn’t sure what to expect.
If you’ve ever felt nervous about trying something new, you’re not alone.
A Welcome That Changed Everything
Walking into your first class can feel like the hardest part. But instead of feeling judged, Ashita found exactly what she needed.
“I really liked how everyone was really welcoming here. It was no pressure, like do whatever you can which is what you want when you are actually going to a new place.”
That welcoming environment helped turn a scary first step into the beginning of a journey she wanted to continue.
At The Pole Room, everyone starts somewhere, and beginners are encouraged to learn at their own pace.
Finally Finding a Workout She Wanted to Keep Coming Back To
Before discovering pole, Ashita had never found a fitness routine that lasted.
“I also come from a very non sports background. I didn’t like joining gym. I was not very active person internally and I’ve tried over the years a lot of things… then every couple of months I would just leave and I would never go back to it.”
It’s something many people can relate to. Sometimes it isn’t about trying harder. It’s about finding something that feels right for you.
For Ashita, that was pole.
“The only thing that made me come back to pole was I think my body was liking it.”
Instead of forcing herself to stay motivated, she found something she genuinely wanted to keep doing.
Why She Kept Coming Back
While learning pole gave Ashita a reason to keep coming back, it wasn’t the only reason.
“The community is like beautiful. There’s no stigma attached to it anymore. I see all my friends here, I see people here, they’re so welcoming in.”
As the weeks went by, the fear she felt on her first day slowly faded.
For many students, the journey isn’t only about learning new skills. It’s also about finding a place where they feel supported, encouraged and welcomed every time they walk into class.
If You’re Feeling Nervous, You’re Not Alone
It’s easy to believe everyone else walks into their first class feeling confident. The truth is, many students start exactly where Ashita did.
Scared. Unsure. Wondering what to expect.
The only difference is they decided to give themselves the chance to find out. Ashita’s advice is simple:
“It’s okay to feel scared, it’s okay to feel terrified or whether it’s good for you or not. So you should give it a go.”
Your First Step Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
You don’t need a sporting background. You don’t need upper body strength. You don’t need dance experience. You don’t need to feel confident before you begin.
You simply need the courage to walk through the door. We’ll guide you through the rest.
