Student Story: How Sarah Took On a New Challenge Through Pole

For a while, one of our students, Sarah, had a fitness routine that ticked all the boxes.

She was going to the gym. She’d added Pilates to the mix. She was staying active and making time for her health. But despite doing all the “right” things, something didn’t feel quite the same anymore.

The workouts had become familiar.

She wasn’t looking for a harder workout. She was looking for something that felt different.

“I just felt like I needed something more because I just felt quite stagnant. You’re kind of doing the same thing. I just wanted to try something new.”

If you’ve ever had that feeling yourself, you’re not alone.

Many people who join The Pole Room aren’t new to fitness. They’re already exercising regularly. They’re simply at a point where their routine no longer excites them the way it once did. They’re looking for a new challenge that keeps them engaged, not because they have to exercise, but because they genuinely want to.

For Sarah, trying pole seemed like the change she was looking for.

Taking the First Step Was the Hardest Part

Wanting to try something new is one thing. Booking your first class is another. Walking into a studio where you don’t know anyone can feel intimidating. It’s natural to wonder whether everyone else will already know what they’re doing or whether you’ll be the only beginner in the room.

Those thoughts were running through Sarah’s mind too.

“You know, you’re putting yourself out there and almost, like, a little bit vulnerable because you’re along with other people and you don’t know anyone as well.”

It’s a feeling that stops many people from trying something they’ve been curious about for months. Not because they don’t think they’ll enjoy it. Because nobody likes feeling like the new person. That’s why first impressions matter so much.

The Experience Wasn’t What She Expected

Like many beginners, she’d imagined walking into a room where everyone else was more experienced. Instead, she found something completely different.

“It was amazing. Probably the most welcoming environment I’ve ever been in. No one judges you. Welcoming, supportive, really friendly.”

Hearing comments like this never gets old. Creating a space where beginners feel comfortable has always been at the heart of what we do. Every beginner class is designed for people who are starting from scratch, so there’s no expectation that you’ll already be strong, flexible or know anything about pole before you arrive.

Our instructors guide every class step by step, and everyone learns at their own pace. Some movements click quickly. Others take a little more practice. That’s all part of learning something new.

Best of all, you’re surrounded by people who remember exactly what it felt like to walk through those doors for the first time.

She Wasn’t Chasing Confidence

When Sarah joined The Pole Room Narre Warren, confidence wasn’t something she was thinking about. She simply wanted a change from the routine she’d fallen into. But as the weeks turned into months, she noticed something she hadn’t expected.

“I didn’t think that I would feel more confident, but I do.”

She didn’t describe one big breakthrough moment. It happened gradually. Each week she learnt something new. She became more familiar with movements that had once felt awkward. Skills that seemed out of reach slowly became achievable. Without really noticing, she was becoming more comfortable backing herself.

That’s often how progress feels. It doesn’t happen all at once. It builds quietly, class after class.

A Year Later, She Saw Just How Far She’d Come

When you’re learning something new every week, it’s easy to focus on what’s next. The next class. The next skill. The next goal. Sometimes the biggest surprise comes when you stop and look back. That’s exactly what happened after a year.

“And it’s amazing what your body can do in the span of, like, a year. I couldn’t even climb the pole when I started.”

That moment says a lot. Not because climbing the pole is the finish line, but because it reminds us that everyone starts somewhere.

The people confidently climbing, spinning or learning more advanced skills were beginners once too. They all had a first class where everything felt unfamiliar. They all had movements that took time to learn. The difference wasn’t natural ability. They simply kept coming back.

Finding Something to Look Forward To

Looking back, it wasn’t just that Sarah had found a different way to exercise. She’d found something that kept her interested.

Instead of repeating the same workout each week, there was always another skill to learn, another movement to improve and another reason to come back. Progress wasn’t measured by numbers on a machine or how many repetitions she’d completed. It was measured by learning something she couldn’t do before.

That’s one of the reasons so many people discover a new appreciation for movement through pole.
Exercise starts feeling less like another task on the calendar and more like something you genuinely enjoy making time for.

Could This Be the Change You’re Looking For?

If you’ve been feeling a little like Sarah did, there’s nothing wrong with admitting your current routine isn’t giving you what it used to. Sometimes your body doesn’t need a different workout. Sometimes your mind needs a different challenge.

You don’t need previous experience. You don’t need upper body strength. You don’t need to be flexible.
You don’t need to know anyone before your first class. You just need to be open to trying something new.

When asked what she’d say to someone who’s been thinking about giving pole a try, she kept it simple.

“Just give it a go. Just do it. Because you’re never going to regret it.”

Sarah came to The Pole Room because she wanted something more than the routine she’d fallen into.

A year later, she hadn’t just found a new way to move. She’d found something she looked forward to every week.

If you’re ready for a fresh challenge and want to experience what it’s like to learn in a welcoming, supportive environment, we’d love to welcome you to one of our beginner pole and aerial classes.
