Watch SHINE and it is easy to assume the people on stage are on a different level. They are not. They are often Pole Foundation graduates who kept turning up.
Here is the actual path.
Your first 8 weeks
You start in our beginner program. No strength required, no experience, no flexibility. Our courses generally run in 8-week blocks across 4 apparatus (pole, silks, lyra and hamoocks), so you work through a structured syllabus with the same group and the same instructor rather than dropping into a random class and hoping for the best.
In week 1 you will learn to hold on. By week 8 you will be spinning, climbing and doing things you did not believe were coming.
Finding your thing
Pole is not one skill, which is why people stay. As you move up the levels you will gravitate somewhere.
- Trick classes for power, grips, inverts and big shapes
- Dance classes for flow, choreography and heels
- Flexibility and conditioning for the unglamorous work that unlocks everything else
- Lyra, silks and hammocks if the pole is not enough
Most competitors train a mix of these. Strength gets you into the trick, and dance is what makes it look good.
Intermediate levels to Advanced, the middle bit
This is where the real change happens, and it is the least dramatic part to watch. You will plateau, get a trick you have chased for months, then plateau again. Somewhere in there you stop calling yourself a beginner.
It is also where the thought first turns up: maybe I could compete.
Getting on a stage
You do not jump straight to the SHINE stage. Every competitor auditions at their home studio first, in front of a judging panel, in a room they already know. Top scorers and judge wildcards go through to the Finals.
That audition is a performance in its own right, and it makes the next stage feel smaller.
SHINE
When you are ready, you enter. There is a category for wherever you are at, you will have your instructor and your classmates in your corner, and you will spend weeks building a routine. Then you walk out onto a lit stage in front of a full theatre and find out what you are made of.
How long does all this take? Some students compete inside 6 months in the beginner category. Some take five years. Some never compete at all and have an absolutely brilliant time anyway. There is no schedule.
Start where they all started
We run beginner courses across seven Melbourne studios: CBD (Flinders Lane), Mitcham, Kilsyth, Highett, Narre Warren, Eltham and Rowville. Pole is 16+, with parental consent under 18, and Lyra and aerials have are generally 14+ outside of any speciality kids classes.
Or come and see where it leads first. SHINE 2026 is on Friday 30 October at The Round, Nunawading.
